August off

"August off" - 42 x 84 cm. Latex, acrylic, spray paint on wood, (unframed/ready to hang) 2026. I paint people. Abstract portraits of people in different scenarios. As my studio is a condo balcony overlooking Meia Praia beach in Lagos, Portugal, I am inspired by the energy of Europeans on vacation. I grew up in South Florida in the 80s-00s and it is a different feeling here. There is a more intense chaos and at the same time, a more harmonious vibe. The umbrellas fill the beach for the busiest month of the year and the dirt parking lots overflowing with families and sun worshippers as they pack like sardines onto the sand. The title is inspired by Cadillac's sad promotional ads mocking Europeans for taking August off... "August off!"
